I have always felt this compulsion to be busy. I’m not exactly sure what I fear will happen if I give myself time to breathe, but it must be pretty intimidating as I can’t remember testing it out.

This semester, however, I may have pushed the envelope a bit too far.  Between my course load (300-level literature courses in renaissance poetry and Dickens, two PoliSci courses, and a course in the history of dance), editing the Pleiad, marching band and my job in the Alumni office, I barely have time to breathe.

That said, the mere fact that I have time to write about how I have no time is a great indication that I’m finally starting to settle into my schedule. I’ve been meaning to update for quite a while now and so much has happened that I want to talk about.

As a lot of it is becoming less and less timely, I’m going to bullet point a few things. Later, if I have time to go deeper into them, I will but at least this way I’ve kind of gotten them out there. :D

  • Old news, but McCain’s choice of Palin (the complete unknown) was strategically brilliant in that it drew everyone’s focus to the Republicans. Previously, there wasn’t any real excitement around the campaign, no real media focus (the ratio of stories about McCain and those about Obama substantiates that). Afterwards, everyone was talking about them and trying to figure the choice out. He finally drew the spotlight to him. Whether or not that will help him in the long run is anyone’s guess, however.
  • My Presidential Campaigns and Elections class looks to be incredibly interesting, both in subject matter and format. Part of the class assignments will be volunteering for a local candidate’s campaign and we have to follow the elections in our home districts, both of which I’m looking forward to.
  • The Pleiad staff looks like it could really be great after some intensive training, despite the fact that just about everyone is really inexperienced. Finally hired the news editor, features editor, and business manager–and a couple of assistant editors for news and features. I definitely came to the realization that I am not cut out to conduct job interviews, however.
  • Kwame Kilpatrick finally resigned as mayor, after drawing negative global attention to the city of Detroit. I’m crossing my fingers that his replacement may actually do some good for a while at least.

And now I really should work on my presentation summary on Thomas Carlyle’s Past and Present, since I do kind of have to have that ready for my 9 a.m. tomorrow. But hopefully I’ll make it back here soon to talk about some more interesting things.
