Oh, Detroit…

03Jul08

Well, they’ve done it again.

Politicians in Detroit have once again made sure that the city is seen as a den of scandal. And this time, it wasn’t even Kwame’s fault.

As pretty much everyone knows, the Mayor is embroiled in a text-message scandal with former aid Christine Beatty, and is now facing various felony charges, including purjury. It’s enough that Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama has avoided any kind of public association with Kwame (that includes avoiding Detroit for his first visit to the state, and asking the Mayor to kindly not show his face at the rally that Obama later had in the city).

But that wasn’t enough trouble for Detroit. Now the FBI is investigating Detroit’s City Council and a multimillion-dollar deal they made for sludge treatment in one of the largest corruption cases in Detroit’s history. Kwame Kilpatrick is denying any involvement in this scandal–which of course sent the good reporters of Detroit scrambling to prove or disprove that statement.

There may be a link, there may not be… either way, this is just more bad press and legal costs for the already struggling city of Detroit.
