Isn’t it wonderful to see two people so perfectly comfortable with each other and in sync that not one single detail seems to be out of place? Picture it… the idyllic fields of wildflowers, the professions of mutual adoration, the matching outfits–the perfect ad for eharmony.com or match.com.

Too bad it was a couple of politicians who have been at each other’s throats for the last year and a half.

I am, of course, talking about Senators Obama and Clinton and their ridiculously staged rally in (where else?) Unity, New Hampshire. It was dripping with so many feel-good details that I want to gag.

That is not to say such a rally should not have taken place. Politically for both of them it was really important. However, I tend to think that they could have made it a little more believable. With every detail so overdone, it became an unintentional satire in my eyes and lost any and all semblance of sincerity.

Need proof? Take a glance at the picture and quotes in this Politico article chronicalling the monumentous event. Here’s one of my favorites:

Unity is not only a beautiful place as we can see, it’s a wonderful feeling, isn’t it?” Clinton said as soon as she stepped to the microphone. “And I know when we start here in this field in Unity, we’ll end on the steps of the Capitol when Barack Obama takes the oath of office as our next president.”

Or if that weren’t sappy enough, try this one:

I’ve admired her as a leader, I’ve learned from her as a candidate, I am proud to call her my friend,” he said, “and I know how much we’ll need both Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton as a party and a country in the months and years to come.”

Blah. Someone needs to get them to understand that while people are not always well informed, they usually aren’t outright stupid either.
